About Dawn's Song

This special music therapy project provides CD players and music CDs to children with cancer, and other serious illnesses, injuries and disabilities. Music is a great source of therapy, helping to ease the pain of cancer treatments, soothing the agitated heart of a scared child and providing peace and serenity for those children who are at the end of life. Music captures the heart of children with many various challenges and disabilities.

About Dawn

This special program is named in honor of Dawn Carrock, who lost her battle with a brain tumor at the young age of 13. Music therapy helped Dawn through many surgeries and treatments, and helped to provide peace at the end of her life for both she and her family. Along with music, she especially loved balloons, so each music CD is presented to each child with a balloon attached in loving memory of Dawn.

About the Kids We Serve

Dawn’s Song serves children ages birth through 18 who have cancer, serious illnesses, injuries, and disabilities. An example of some of the conditions that challenge these brave children, include: cancer, cerebral palsy, spinal injuries, autism, heart disease, leukemia, blood disorders, Downs Syndrome, Spina Bifida, muscular dystrophy, brain injuries, burn victims, and more. Many of the children we serve are patients in a children's hospital, attending a camp, or attend a special needs site.

In addition, we accept referrals from doctors, hospice and family members of patients who are critically ill, chronically ill, or are facing the end of life.

How Dawn’s Song Helps Children in Need

Music is a great source of therapy, helping to ease the pain of chemotherapy treatments, soothing the agitated heart of a scared child, providing peace and serenity for those children who are at the end of life and enriching the lives of children with physical and mental disabilities. Because these debilitating illnesses affect the whole family, we also give CDs to the patient's siblings, to help them through the lonely nights when Mom or Dad have to be at the hospital and away from home caring for their brother or sister.

The KEYS staff travels to each site, hand-delivering the items to the children at each site, while sharing words of encouragement, inspiration and singing songs of hope with them, making each visit very special for the patients/campers, their parents and siblings. A variety of staff travel to the sites throughout the year, including; KEYS program performers, stage crew, and celebrity guests.

Nothing is more rewarding than seeing the weary face of a child light up when we present them with a music CD with their own special balloon attached! That is what continues to drive us to do what we do at no cost to the sites or families we serve. These special magical moments are what our wonderful sponsors and grantors make possible everyday.
